The man in his late 20s was detained on Thursday afternoon and taken to a garda station in south Munster for questioning.
He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
That period of detention can be extended if the man opts for rest and food breaks.
The arrest came as gardaí are trying to trace all the revellers who attended a combined St Stephen’s Day house party and birthday celebration in Tipperary at which the young Polish man suffered fatal injuries.
Detectives stressed that they are still investigating “all the circumstances” in which the 35 year old man died as they attempt to clarify if visible injuries on the man’s body were sustained accidentally in a fall or in an assault.
A post mortem examination was conducted yesterday on the young man at University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
Gardaí declined to release the findings of the examination for operational reasons.
The deceased Polish national will not be identified until all his family members have been traced and contacted overseas.
Gardaí are now liaising with Interpol, Europol and the Polish police over the matter.
The 35 year old was discovered unresponsive at a property at Ballycrana, Kilross, just outside Tipperary town in the early hours of Wednesday morning following a house party.
The two storey property is located close to the Tipperary-Limerick border.
Gardaí discovered the man in a downstairs room with visible injuries.
Despite desperate attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be transferred to hospital.
Gardaí sealed off the scene and a forensic examination of the property continued throughout Thursday by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.
The man’s remains were transferred to UHW where a full post mortem examination was conducted on Thursday morning.
Detectives are now trying to trace everyone who attended the St Stephen’s Day party at the rural Ballycrana property.
Gardaí are also examining reports the deceased may have been socialising in Tipperary town and Galbally in the hours before his death.
The gathering at the Ballycrana property was apparently a combined Christmas celebration and birthday party – and a number of those present were attending from other parts of Ireland.
The property had been rented by a group of men who were working locally with several understood to be from Eastern Europe.
Door-to-door inquiries were conducted yesterday throughout the Ballycrana and Kilross areas to determine if anyone heard or saw anything suspicious on December 26 or into the early hours of December 27.
The deceased is understood to have been living locally for some time and had been working in the Tipperary area for several years.
Gardaí renewed their appeal to anyone who may have information about the man’s death to contact them.
“Gardaí continue to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body of a man at a residence in Ballycrana, Kilross, Co Tipperary, shortly after 4am yesterday, Wednesday December 27.
“The body was removed from the scene to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford yesterday (Wednesday). A post-mortem examination has been completed today.
“The scene at Ballycrana remains preserved this evening.
“Gardaí continue to appeal to any person with any information that can assist with this investigation to contact Tipperary town garda station on 062 80670, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.”
It is understood the man was working in the south Tipperary area and would regularly socialise in Tipperary town, Galbally and Kilmallock.
Councillor Eddie Ryan said the tragedy had cast a dark cloud over the local community.
“People are sad to hear of something like this happening in our midst. People are heartbroken to think somebody has died like that in our area.”
Councillor John Crosse, who is based at Donohill, said the local community was deeply shocked by the tragedy and would offer every support to the family of the deceased.
“My thoughts and prayers are with this man and his family. It is absolutely heart breaking to see something like this with the New Year on the horizon,” he said.
“This is a very tightknit and proud local community and I know everyone locally is deeply shocked and saddened by what happened.
“A death like this is upsetting at any time but I think it is particularly tragic when it occurs over the Christmas and New Year period.”
Councillor Mary Hanna Hourigan, who also lives locally, said south Tipperary householders were in disbelief over the tragedy.
“The first thing people knew that there was something going on locally was the large garda presence in Kilross over the morning,” she said.
“People couldn’t believe it when they heard the news that someone had died locally. This is a really nice community and everybody looks out for everyone else. That is what makes this so very shocking.”
One Kilross resident, who asked not to be named, said the local area was home to a large number of people who commuted to work in Limerick, Tipperary, Kilmallock, Mitchelstown and Cahir.
“This is a very quiet area and people cannot credit something like this happening here. It is such a quiet and peaceful community,” she said.
“It is hard to believe a St Stephen’s Night could end in a terrible tragedy like this.”
