Two suspects, a male and a female, are in garda custody following the attacks while a weapon has also been recovered.

The incidents are understood to be unconnected to the separate arrest of a man in Dublin’s GPO today who was armed with a knife.

Gardaí were alerted to the two serious assaults in Dublin’s north inner-city this afternoon.

In the first assault, a male and a female were injured by two suspects at Wolfe Tone Square and the victims were subsequently brought to hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency services were then notified of a second assault at Moore Lane nearby in which a woman was injured.

Sources said that all three victims suffered suspected slash wounds and are currently being treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The two suspects were detained nearby in relation to the assaults and are currently being held at garda stations in the city centre.

A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí in Store Street have arrested a male and female in relation to two incidents of assault that occurred this afternoon, Thursday 2nd November, 2023 at Wolfe Tone Square and Moore Lane.

“The first incident refers to a male and female injured by two suspects at Wolfe Tone Square. Both injured parties were removed from the scene with serious injuries that are non-life threatening to the Mater Hospital.

“The second incident refers to a female injured at Moore Lane, she too was removed from the scene to The Mater Hospital, with non-life threatening injuries.

“A man and a woman were arrested in relation to both incidents and were taken to a city centre Garda station where they are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations ongoing,” the spokeswoman added.

In a separate incident this afternoon a male, aged in his late 50s, was arrested at the GPO on O’Connell Street armed with a knife.

It’s understood he had threatened workers with the weapon before being confronted by staff and bystanders.

He was subsequently disarmed and arrested by uniformed gardaí and is currently being questioned at Store Street garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
