The rot in our institutions runs deep in Canada – be it our colleges or universities, our elementary or secondary schools, our unions or our governments.

Show me which one has not been infected with rampant anti-Semitism and radical politics that is detached from the lives of average Canadians.

This has been fully on display over the last week since Hamas began their horrific terrorist attacks in Israel.

We’ve watched in dismay as elected officials marched in support of Hamas, union leaders expressed support for terrorist acts, and law professors at our supposedly best schools defended the Hamas attacks on social media.

On Friday, we saw people come out and rally on a so-called “day of rage” because the leader of Hamas called on them to do so.

In Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal, and even tiny Kamloops there were rallies that happened on the day Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal had called for attacks and activism. Let’s be clear, if you were marching “in support of Palestine” on Friday, you were actually marching in support of Hamas and endorsing the terrorism they inflicted upon Israel starting last weekend.

A grab from a UGC video posted on Telegram on October 9, 2023, shows an armed Palestinian militant leading a man during the Supernova music festival, near Kibbutz Reim in the Negev desert in southern Israel. Hamas gunmen killed around 250 people who attended an outdoor music festival in an Israeli community near Gaza at the weekend, a volunteer who helped collect the bodies said on Monday. LILLEY: CBC’s arguments for not calling Hamas a terror group are weak

Israeli security forces stand along a debris-strewn street in Tel Aviv after it was hit by a rocket fired by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise large-scale attack against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

LILLEY: Canada excluded from ‘Quint’ statement on Israel for a reason

Dozens of rockets were fired from the blockaded Gaza Strip towards Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, an AFP journalist in the Palestinian territory said, as sirens warning of incoming fire blared in Israel.

Canadian and world leaders react to vicious Hamas attacks on Israel

This rot within our country, our institutions, is not new. It has been on a slow boil for a long time and few have been willing to do the heavy lifting to deal with it.

More than 20 years ago, as a young reporter in Montreal, I witnessed the student union at Concordia University, a school with a large Jewish population, march into a meeting with a military drum being played, the Palestinian flag being carried and chants of Intifada. Today, the views that seemed radical at Concordia in 2001 are mainstream on campuses across the country.

That’s why the union representing sessional lecturers, teaching assistants and others at McMaster supporting the Hamas terror attacks shouldn’t be shocking if you have been paying attention. Same with statements from the various student unions at York University or the University of Toronto at Mississauga.

These academics aren’t interested in antiquated ideas like right and wrong, they’re only interested in deciding who is the oppressor and who is the oppressed based on their own bizarre world view. We see this in the online posting of people like CUPE boss Fred Hahn but also the musings of elected officials like NDP MPP Sarah Jama.

It’s why people think it’s appropriate to march in rallies where the Hamas flag is flown, where chants of “from the river to the sea” ring out, and where organizers play recordings of the Israeli early warning air raid siren to warn of incoming missiles while the crowd chants Zionists hide.

All of these things happened in Toronto over the past week, not in some dark corner but in the open, on our major streets and with hundreds if not thousands cheering on.

Toronto – October 9 – During the pro-Hamas rally, demonstrators mockingly play the sound of “Tzeva Adom”, the Israeli early-warning radar system warning civilians of missiles. They clap and cheer and say “listen to the beauty”. Then, in Arabic: “Zionist, hide, hide”. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/sOK216LITf

You don’t need to be on Israel’s side to see how wrong this is, how sick and twisted the thinking of some people is to cheer on the slaughter of innocent civilians.

People marching in Nazi rallies, singing songs in praise of the Third Reich and carrying their flag would be rightly shunned in Canadian society and it should be the same if you are showing support for Hamas.

Yet, we have people in positions of authority, law school professors at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall at York openly supporting what Hamas has done all in the name of resistance and decolonization.

    No more.

You can support the Palestinian cause, you can want the people of Gaza to be free and have a better life, but once you state that you support the barbaric acts of Hamas, you are no longer a member of civilized society, nor should you be treated as such.
