Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Jonathan Conricus said 300,000 army reservists are at the border along with artillery, preparing to “execute the mission that they have been given”.
“That is to make sure that Hamas, at the end of this war, won’t have any military capabilities by which they can threaten or kill Israeli civilians.”
Airstrikes continued to ravage neighbourhoods in Gaza overnight as Israel stepped up its offensive, with the military claiming troops have killed at least 1,000 Palestinian gunmen since the Hamas attack on Saturday.
The military said more than 1,200 people have died in Israel, including 155 soldiers. In Gaza 1,055 people have been killed, including at least 260 children.

All schools in Israel to shift to remote learning
Israeli schools – which have been shuttered since Hamas’ onslaught from Gaza over the weekend – are to shift to remote learning on Sunday, the Education Ministry has said.
The online studies “will focus first and foremost on emotional and social aspects, in order to strengthen resilience, and on educational content appropriate for the situation,” the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

James Cleverly’s visit to Israel today is aimed at showing the UK’s “unwavering solidarity” with the country, a foreign office spokesperson has said.
“The Foreign Secretary has arrived in Israel today to demonstrate the UK’s unwavering solidarity with the Israeli people following Hamas’ terrorist attacks,” said the spokesperson.
“He will be meeting survivors of the attacks and senior Israeli leaders to outline UK support for Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Couple who survived festival massacre sign up as army reservists
The IDF has shared the story of a young couple who have joined the Israeli army as reservists after surviving a horrific massacre at a festival on Saturday.
Around 260 revellers are understood to have been killed when Hamas fighters stormed the festival, which was taking place in the Israeli desert.
The IDF wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Zohar and Liron are a young couple who survived the horrific massacre at the music festival in southern Israel. Immediately after escaping, they both reported for reserve duty in the Combat Engineering Corps’ reserve battalion.”
Thousands injured in Gaza outstripping hospital beds – surgeon
A surgeon told the BBC’s Today programme the hospital he works at in Gaza is being treated as a refugee camp.
“Gaza has around 2200, 2500 beds and we’ve already had 4500 wounded,” Ghasan Abu Sitta told the Today programme earlier, describing a “continuous stream of wounded people” entering the hospital where he works.
“People are afraid and so they’re bringing their families to stay in the compound of the hospital as a safe space.”
British bank account frozen over links to Hamas funding – Israeli police
An account at British bank Barclays linked to fundraising for the Palestinian militant group Hamas has been frozen, Israeli police said.
The Israeli police said in a statement on Tuesday that its cyber unti worked with British police to freeze the account.
Its details were published by Hamas “for the purpose of depositing donation funds”, the statement said.
A spokesperson for Barclays declined to comment on the freezing of the account, or confirm the accuracy of the detail in the police statement.
Israel has also frozen cryptocurrency accounts used to solicit donations for Hamas, the statement said.

20 arrested in France over antisemitic acts
French police have arrested more than 20 people over dozens of antisemitic acts carried out since Saturday, the government said.
These included harassment of Jewish children by fellow pupils at school. A pupil in the wider Paris region was reportedly attacked by fellow pupils who ripped his t-shirt.
France is home to some of Europe’s largest Muslim and Jewish populations.
In the UK, reports of antisemitic incidents have tripled since the weekend compared with the same period last year, a Jewish charity said on Tuesday.
Hospitals in Gaza running low on fuel and supplies
Aid group Doctors Without Borders said that fuel and medical supplies in Gaze are running dangerously low.
“In the Al Awda Hospital, we consumed three weeks’ worth of emergency stock in three days, partly due to 50 patients coming in at once from Jabalia camp after it was struck,” said Matthias Kannes.
Gaza’s biggest hospital, Al-Shifa, only has enough fuel for three days, he added.
