One member has been expelled and two others handed lengthy suspensions after the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) completed its investigation into the Lord’s Pavilion Ashes confrontation.

    Key points:

The MCC says the behaviour “fell well below” what is expected of membersAustralian players were confronted after they left the field for lunchThe incident was triggered by Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal

Australia demanded a “please explain” from the MCC after players were abused and two were allegedly tripped by some members on a dramatic final day of the Lord’s men’s Ashes Test on July 2.

Triggered by Alex Carey’s stumping of Jonny Bairstow when he walked out of his crease, matters came to a head when Usman Khawaja and David Warner stopped in the long room and approached one patron.

Footage from inside the long room as players left the field at lunch showed players were yelled at by several members and labelled “cheats”.

The abuse from different members reportedly included several expletives and calling players a “disgrace”, “liars” and telling them to return home.

The drama is understood to have continued up the stairs and out of camera shot before players ate lunch.

The MCC on Thursday released the outcome of its disciplinary process and charged three members with abusive, offensive or inappropriate behaviour or language.

One was expelled, another handed a four-and-a-half-year club suspension and the third member was suspended for 30 months.

The MCC did not disclose the detail of its findings or identify the three members.

“The actions of the three individuals in the Pavilion on the day in question fell well below the behaviour expected from our members,” a statement read.

“The penalties set out above are the consequences of breaching the club’s code of conduct.”
