    Japan’s Rakuten closer to ‘platinum’ bands for struggling mobile unit

    TOKYO — Rakuten Group’s mobile communications unit is a step closer to accessing high-frequency bands that it hopes will improve service as it seeks to generate cash on years of network investments.

    The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced Tuesday that it had received a request for band allocation from Rakuten Mobile. A decision is expected as early as Oct. 23.
