The NRL has issued North Queensland Cowboys’ Valentine Holmes with a breach notice after an investigation into a social media post from the weekend.

Holmes posted, and then deleted, a photo of himself on Sunday with what appeared to be a white bag in his mouth.
An NRL statement said Holmes had breached the league’s code of conduct with the post.
“It is alleged Holmes engaged in conduct which has brought the game and his club into disrepute by publicly associating the game with illegal drugs,” the NRL statement read.
Holmes has five business days to respond to the notice, and until that time the NRL will not be releasing any information on a proposed sanction.
On Sunday, the Cowboys confirmed they were assisting the NRL with its investigation.
While the image was posted in the early hours of Sunday, there is no indication as to when the photo was taken, nor what, if anything, is in the bag.
Holmes represented Australia during last year’s Rugby League World Cup and was also part of the Queensland State of Origin side that won the 2023 series.
The 28-year-old sat out the Cowboys’ final four games of the season due to suspension as the club missed out on a place in the finals.
