Premier League fixtures today – your guide to Sunday’s games

    [ad_1]

Most of this weekend’s football may be taking place on Saturday 19 August, but there is still plenty of exciting action to get our gnashers stuck into on Sunday.

The first week of Premier League action came and went in a flash and we are already thirsty for more. It was not a weekend of shocks or major upsets, but there were still plenty of narratives playing out up and down the country.

Chelsea’s battle with Liverpool on and off the pitch, Luton’s sobering Premier League reality and of course stacks of VAR drama. It was an exciting weekend to begin an exciting season, and there is plenty more to come.

Here is your guide to Sunday’s Premier League matches.

Both Aston Villa and Everton suffered sobering defeats last weekend, albeit in different circumstances.

Villa lost 5-1 away at Newcastle United as Unai Emery’s side were continually and ruthlessly cut open by the Magpies. The Villans’ high line was repeatedly exposed and a serious injury to Tyrone Mings only added to the misery felt by the Midlands club.

Meanwhile, Everton thrashed Fulham at Goodison Park, but somehow came away from the game having lost 1-0. Bernd Leno had to make nine saves on Merseyside as the Toffees failed to find the back of the net time and time again, and Sean Dyche’s side were punished by Bobby De Cordova-Reid at the other end.

Aston Villa vs Everton is the most played fixture in English football history, with Sunday’s clash being the 211th meeting between the clubs. Villa won both games last season and haven’t lost to the Toffees since March 2016.

Moises Caicedo is a Blue! 🔵

    — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) August 14, 2023

Both West Ham and Chelsea had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their opening Premier League matches. The Hammers travelled to Bournemouth, while the Blues hosted Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

West Ham and Chelsea had both positives and negatives to take away from their respective clashes, but this London derby promises to be a different proposition for both teams.

Chelsea will hope that new British record £115m signing Moises Caicedo can be involved, with the slim possibility that Romeo Lavia can also feature in some capacity. West Ham will also be eager to get their new signings involved, with both Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse having arrived at the club recently.

While both clubs have enjoyed success in this fixture over the past couple of seasons, Chelsea are unbeaten against the Hammers in their last three encounters. However, the Irons are unbeaten in the last two games between the sides at the London Stadium.
