Australia’s Alex de Minaur has recorded a shock straight-sets win over Daniil Medvedev to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal in Toronto.

De Minaur displayed his fighting qualities for the second day running with a 7-6 (9/7), 7-5 win over former world number one Medvedev.
Contesting his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal, de Minaur rallied from 5-2 in the first set, saving three set points in the tiebreak.
After winning the opening set, de Minaur rebounded from a break down in the second to seal victory against world number three Medvedev.
Russian Medvedev won the Toronto title in 2021 in the build-up to his breakthrough US Open triumph.
“I had to play some of my best tennis today,” de Minaur said after the match.
“It has been a great week for me so far. I played the right way today. I think having played him at the end of last year gave me the confidence that I had a chance.
“I just had to play the right way and I am extremely proud of the effort and to still be alive.”
De Minaur faces Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the last four.
The 24-year-old snared his seventh crown in Acapulco this year before reaching the last week in Los Cabos, losing to world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas.
World number 18 de Minaur is set to rise to at least a career-best 14th in the rankings next week and could wind up on the cusp of the top 10 if he wins the Toronto title.
Davidovich Fokina reached the semifinals by beating American Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2.
The US Open begins in New York on August 29.
