The Uttar Pradesh Police has dismissed seven policemen from police services for being allegedly involved in robbing Rs 1.40 crore from an employee of a Gujarat-based businessman in the Bhelupur area of Varanasi district on May 31.
This comes two days after six persons, including two policemen, were arrested for their alleged involvement in kidnapping and robbing a Banda-based businessman in Auraiya district.
Among the seven policemen dismissed from the services are one station house officer and three sub-inspectors — SHO Rama Kant Dubey, sub-inspectors Sushil Kumar, Mahesh Kumar, and Utkarsh Chaturvedi; and constables Mahendra Kumar Patel, Kapil Dev Pandey, and Shivchand. All were posted at Bhelupur police station in Varanasi district.
While police said their investigation into the Rs 1.40 crore robbery case is still ongoing and they have arrested four persons so far, they are yet to book the seven dismissed policemen.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Varanasi) Santosh Kumar Singh said: “The seven policemen were initially suspended for negligence and later during the probe they were found to be involved in criminal activity. They have been dismissed from police services. The investigation into the robbery case is going on and on the basis of evidence collected, action will be taken against them.”
On May 31, Varanasi Police claimed to have recovered Rs 92.94 lakh cash from an abandoned car in the Bhelupur area. Suspecting foul play, senior police officials ordered a preliminary inquiry into the incident. During the probe, police came to know that on May 27, a Gujarat-based businessman’s employee, who was staying at a rented flat in Bhelupur, was robbed.
Police contacted the Gujarat-based businessman and his staff who confirmed that the recovered cash was the part of money looted from the rented flat on May 27, said a police officer.
On June 4, the businessman’s employee, Vikram Singh, who is also a resident of Gujarat, got an FIR lodged against one Mantu Rai, a Varanasi resident, and 12 unidentified people on charges of dacoity at Bhelupur police station.
Notably, the vehicle from where the money was recovered belonged to Mantu Rai. Initially, the seven policemen were suspended on charges of negligence of duty.
Additional Commissioner of Police Singh said that while going through the CCTV footage from near the rented flat, investigators spotted Mantu Rai’s vehicle going with a police jeep to the complainant’s house on May 27. During questioning, Rai also admitted his involvement as well as that of the policemen in the robbery, said a police officer.
“After the incident, the businessman started approaching senior authorities in the government. Policemen thought by showing recovery of a large portion of money on May 31, the matter could end without lodging an FIR,” said a police officer.
As per the Investigating Officer Rajesh Kumar Singh, who has now been appointed the SHO of Bhelupur, four persons — Mantu Rai, Ghanshyam, Pradeep, and Waseem — have been arrested so far. “Ghanshyam, Pradeep, and Waseem were arrested in Delhi and they are being brought to Varanasi on transit remand… We are probing the role of policemen. They have not been booked in the case yet,” said the IO.
Two days ago, police arrested six persons, including a station house officer and a sub-inspector, in connection with a kidnapping and robbery case involving a Banda-based businessman. Police also claimed to have recovered around 50 kg of silver from their possession that was robbed from the businessman while he was on his way to Auraiya with his family on June 6.
