Arc’teryx is a brand beloved by the mountaineering and climbing community as they know how to make a robust shell jacket. The Beta LT uses 3L GORE-TEX® fabric and a bombproof build that will keep you dry and comfortable no matter the weather.

It comes with a lot of great features for protection against the elements. The downside of the jacket is that it’s very expensive. If you’re occasionally active outdoors, you likely don’t need the exceptional protection of the jacket. We recommend it as a solid investment for active men who are fanatics of sports like mountain biking, climbing, skiing, camping, or hiking.

Filson Tin Cloth Work Jacket

This is the jacket if you want a no-frills shell jacket designed to be used and abused. Filson’s workwear has faithfully served men for decades due to its exceptional quality. A staple of their line is the Filson Tin Cloth Work Jacket which has been in circulation since the 1930s. The rugged jacket displays a classic style that feels appropriate on city streets or a ranch.

Oil-finished canvas provides reliable protection and ages gracefully as a jacket that remains in your wardrobe for years. Most importantly, the coat can easily fight a chill and break the wind thanks to the heavy material.

Its roots are tied with loggers, ranchers, and outdoorsmen, so it features a casual cut for work and layers. The cut can be negative or positive, depending on your needs. It’s a great jacket for any wild adventure you may find.

Patagonia Better Sweater® Fleece Jacket

The Patagonia Better Sweater is a perfect fleece sweater and excels as a cozy mid-layer. It’s thick, soft, and slim while still being one of the warmest fleece jackets on the market. Patagonia’s fleece products have always stood out from the market in our years of testing athletic gear.

The jacket’s cost is high compared to a standard fleece jacket. However, the quality and durable material provide some excellent longevity. I’ve had my Better Sweater for seven years and it has seen plenty of use. The Better Sweater comes in either a 1/4 zip pullover or a full zip-up jacket.

Arc’teryx Cerium Down Hoodie

The Arc’teryx Cerium Down Jacket is incredible and one of our favorite lightweight jackets for men. Down jackets have many benefits, but the exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio makes them great light jackets. The Cerium can achieve this with high-quality 850-fill-power goose down. At the same time, a lightweight nylon 10D shell makes for an incredibly light outer layer that protects from the elements.

I love the high-tech design feature of composite mapping. Arc’teryx has effectively added a small amount of Coreloft synthetic insulation to areas prone to moisture. The synthetic material is vitalized around the shoulders, collar, cuffs, and, most importantly, underarms.

The jacket is well-loved by outdoor enthusiasts and is put to the test daily. It shouldn’t be a surprise that it has an excellent reputation. The Cerium Down Jacket is a solid choice for more active men in cooler weather. It has become my go-to down jacket and is used for active holidays in the mountains. It’s easily the best packable down jacket, but you’ll have to pay for that performance.

Levi’s Sherpa Trucker Jacket

If comfort and classic style are what you’re after, you can beat Levi’s Sherpa Trucker Jacket. The denim jacket has been a style icon for decades and is always among the best men’s lightweight jackets. A cozy interior that is fleece and quilted flannel provides plenty of warmth.

While the exterior features various fabric choices, the classic is denim. Levi’s knows how to construct high-quality denim that does not stretch but will mold to the body. Finding a jacket that will only fit better with time is tough. Fit is slim, and it doesn’t feel overly boxy or loose despite the fleece and wide collar style.

Value is one of the greatest strengths of the jacket. Its quality, warmth, and comfort are near impossible to beat. This jacket will forever remain a staple in my wardrobe.

Everlane’s The Bomber Jacket is a modern version of a classic flight jacket. It’s a stylish jacket that is perfect for mild weather. We love the clean lines and timeless design that make it ideal for any setting or destination.

The jacket uses an excellent lightweight fabric that works well in mild weather. We find the material provides a nice balance of comfort and durability. The jacket fits across the body wonderfully. The Marmot PreCip Eco jacket boasts any feature you need when the wet weather hits. To make it only better is the tremendous value you get with this jacket as you get a lot of rain jacket for the price. It boasts excellent features like a hood drawstring, waterproof coated nylon fabric, and pit zips for ventilation.

A slight hi-lo silhouette covers your back and allows for protection below a backpack on your waist. It also comes in some excellent color options. Marmot makes a lot of great rain jackets when it comes to packability, value, and function.

Not everyone needs a rain jacket that will hold up to an ocean wave or downpour. The Precip scratches that itch between wanting a cheap packable jacket and getting a quality piece of gear — it’s a fraction of the price of the Arc’teryx jacket above.

Patagonia Down Sweater

The Patagonia Down Sweater has a comfortable design and is well-suited for city wear and weekend trips, making it one of the best men’s lightweight jackets. In addition to being a great down jacket, the shell is 100% recycled polyester, and the 800-fill-power goose down is traceable. What stands out about the Down Sweater is its versatility and price.

It’s been Patagonia’s best-selling product for years because it feels equally at home in the mountains and city while not breaking the bank. It’s an easy pick for a down jacket, and we love the color choices. The Arc’teryx Cerium above is a superior jacket, but hard to say it’s $150 better!

The KUHL Burr Jacket is a stylish and practical choice for men after a versatile and durable outer layer. A durable cotton canvas finished with DWR gives the Burr Jacket an excellent amount of weather resistance. It does a nice job in harsh weather conditions and can keep you dry in light rain or snow.

A fantastic mens travel jacket, the REI Coop Down Jacket 2.0 offers a ton of value for $100. REI has designed a great coat perfect for casual use and cool climates. When the company first released the jacket, it flew off the shelves and has been in high demand ever since. Its closest competitors in quality come in at about double the price.

The jacket weighs 11 ounces and packs up nicely. Warmth is its only downfall, but the 3 ounces of 650-fill-power down will keep you warm in cool climates. When it comes time to move to the next destination, the jacket packs up into the left pocket and occupies minimal space in your luggage. A nylon shell is lightweight and has some water-resistant capabilities. It has a water-repellent finish that should handle light rain, snow, and wind.

This is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an affordable, no-fuss jacket that will handle travel, light winter sports, and cool days. It’s a lightweight down jacket under $100; it is tough not to love that price point.

The North Face Apex Bionic

The Apex Bionic is easily the best-selling product from the brand The North Face for a good reason. It is a versatile and stylish outer layer perfect for various outdoor activities. Durable and stretchy, the softshell material allows the Apex Bionic jacket to withstand inclement weather like light wind and rain.

It features a full-zip front with a high collar and a chin guard to protect against the elements, as well as a variety of pockets for storing your essentials. The Apex Bionic jacket is also designed with a relaxed fit and a hem cinch cord, allowing you to adjust the fit and keep out drafts. Its casual use and price point make it the most popular softshell jacket on the market.

While Lifaloft does not perform as well, goose down still supplies plenty of warmth while remaining lightweight. It has a beautiful fit that is flattering as a jacket and is slim enough to work as a mid-layer. The best use for the jacket is for sports in cold weather, like snowshoeing or skiing.

Arc’teryx Gamma MX Hoody

Arc’teryx knows how to deliver a premium product and often takes the top spot in categories if not for the price. The Gamma MX is a tremendous soft-shell jacket. It brings fantastic performance with quality materials and a great fit that moves with your body.

The Gamma offers a lot of breathability, comfort, and durability. When it’s cool out, I often feel comfortable wearing the Gamma while hiking uphill. Even in a tremendous hardshell jacket, I still feel a little clammy.

It’s also a sharp-looking jacket that feels at home in the mountains or running errands in town. It’s so great you can even wear it as a ski jacket. We love a piece that feels this universal, thus better value despite a high price tag.

Helly Hansen Roam

Meet the Roam, our everyday go-to trail jacket for hiking and light adventures. This classic pack-and-go outer layer is specially crafted to provide both durability and lightweight comfort, for those days when you are really trying to keep it light. We particularly love to bring it on bike rides!

The Roam is made with wind-resistant fabric, offering reliable protection during breezy hikes and is equipped with a PFC-free, water-repellent treatment, keeping you dry and comfortable when encountering light moisture on the trail.

I love carrying this jacket in my back pocket or water bottle holder when mountain biking if I’m worried about inclement weather or colder days. In particular, this is a terrific option for fast hikers, trail runners, or bikers seeking protection without dying of heat.

Columbia Bugaboo II Fleece Interchange

If you’re traveling to an area known for drastic weather changes, you want to find a men’s travel jacket to mix with layers. Luckily, Columbia has done the work for you. With their Bugaboo II Fleece Interchange, you will have the 3-in-1 ability to change back and forth from the cozy fleece inner layer to the waterproof shell in seconds.

Or wear it all in one for maximum protection when the winter weather hits. We’re not big fans of interchange systems, but this Columbia version is a lot of bang for the buck.

Arc’teryx Atom LT Hoody

Arc’teryx makes this list of hiking jackets a lot, but it does carry a big reputation for a reason. One of their best-selling jackets is the Atom LT, a tremendously lightweight and warm mid-layer jacket. They’ve taken the stance that it’s not broken, don’t fix it, and the jacket has remained the same for years. The Atom delivers everything you want in a mid-layer between warmth, mobility, and fit.

It has a drawback; the outer shell is excellent at letting heat escape, but it also means that wind cuts through the jacket. Altogether this is an ideal jacket for those who enjoy sports outdoors in cold weather, like hiking, climbing, backpacking, ski touring, or snowboarding.

REI Co-op Stormbolt GTX

REI Co-op makes some awesome products that offer a lot of value. Their Stormbolt GTX is a fantastic example for those seeking a technical jacket that doesn’t break the bank, disclosure it’s expensive. However, with this jacket, you’re getting tremendous value from a waterproof/weatherproof shell jacket.

The jacket shell is durable and protects against the elements while the interior remains soft and dry. We like the features such as hand pockets, waist cinches, vents, a comfortable hood, and cuff adjustments.

If you’re not an avid outdoor enthusiast, don’t fret, as this hybrid jacket blends elements for an everyday and technical hiking jacket. You’ll notice it mainly in the cut of the jacket. This lightweight jacket can easily roll into the hood for travel days or ride in your daypack. It’s a good men’s jacket for travel.

How to Pick one of the best light jackets for men?

Style

Style is always an issue for rain jackets and light jackets for men, particularly those made for wetter climates. It’s pretty easy to start to dislike a particular coat because, while functional, it doesn’t have any style or look.

We’ve kept this list of jackets narrowed to options that give you a certain versatility and a sleek and understated look so you won’t feel clunky, boxy, or out of place. Plus, something you’ll be happy to wear when you’re back home, on your way to work, or just out and about on your day off.

Material

Material plays the most critical role in the quality of a jacket, and it’s easy to distinguish jacket quality when you begin with the materials used. To make things easier, here are the five primary materials you’ll find in the jackets ranked. It’s also interesting to note that as the material increases in technical functions, it also sacrifices looks and style.

Gore-Tex

To understand how GORE-TEX works, it’s helpful first to understand the two main methods of waterproofing: coating and laminating. Coating involves spreading a thin layer of hydrophobic material over the exterior of a jacket, allowing the fabric to absorb weather-resistant properties.

This method is commonly used on nylon, polyester, and cotton and is known as DWR (durable water repellent). While it is a cheaper form of waterproofing, it is not fully waterproof and can break down over time with washing. Products like Scotchguard can be used to restore the DWR.

On the other hand, laminating is a more expensive and effective form of waterproofing. The most well-known example is GORE-TEX, a brand name for a material made by bonding a cross weave of nylon fabrics to create a waterproof material. This method provides reliable waterproof protection and is commonly used in outdoor gear.

Nylon

Nylon is a great product and what you find throughout most outdoor gear. It offers excellent weight to strength. Nylon is also water-resistant, breathable, and quick-drying.

Canvas

Smack dab in the middle of this list is Canvas. It requires wax or coating to remain water and weather-resistant. The best example is the hiking jackets on offer from Fjallraven; they use their proprietary G-1000 canvas material.

Polyester

Polyester is super prevalent. It’s a cheaper material and one of the best ways to distinguish high-end vs. more affordable options. Polyester has a lower fail rate, easier to snag, and requires a weather-resistant coating to remain water-resistant, which breaks down over time.

Cotton

Cotton is a classic style, but it’s not great when it comes down to jackets. It’s soft but absorbs moisture. We never advise wearing cotton in cold or wet weather environments.

Water Resistance

If you’ve ever been caught in an unexpected downpour while traveling, you know what a dampener it can put on the rest of your day. So, finding a travel jacket with some water resistance is a biggy. 

Nylon and polyester jackets are great for this. They have natural moisture-wicking abilities and usually come with a waterproof coating that keeps the rain from getting through. Cotton, on the other hand, while comfortable, is awful in this scenario. This material gets soggy and misshapen and can take hours to dry, leaving you cranky and miserable for the rest of the day. 

Wrinkle Resistance

Picking a great mens travel jacket means getting something wrinkle resistant. When traveling in the summer or dry, summer-like climates, chances are your jacket will be stuffed into your bag or thrown in your suitcase. So, when the time arises that you need it, it will likely be a wrinkled disaster. Luckily, many fabrics are naturally wrinkle-resistant. 

Merino wool is a fan favorite. It’s soft and comfortable against the skin while holding its smooth shape even after days of being stuck at the bottom of your travel bag. Polyester is another good one. Like Merino wool, it maintains its shape and is highly comfortable. It’s also one of the most accessible fabrics, which is a bonus! Again, you want to stay away from cotton and ultra-thin nylon here. 

Breathability 

Even when faced with the coldest climates, you still want a men’s travel jacket that gives you some form of breathability. Without it, you’re likely to get sweaty and sticky underneath, and that’s never comfortable. Breathability comes in a few states, some inherent in the fabrics and some as an added feature. 

Jackets with a “mesh-lined yolk” will give you maximum airflow where you need it most while keeping the cold air out. This feature benefits winter jackets for travel with warm down or synthetic fill that traps the heat. Also, jackets made from Merino wool, nylon, and polyester have significant degrees of breathability. I think you might be able to tell what our favorite fabrics will be at this point!

Packability

While traveling, it’s a no-brainer to bring clothing that can squish down to a reasonable size. All the more room for those knick-knacks and souvenirs you will pick up along the way! So, finding a minimalistic men’s travel jacket when packed down is significant, and there are a few ways that lightweight travel jackets achieve this. 

First, some come with compression sacks. It will be a small bag that will scrunch down your jacket to its smallest size so you can easily throw it into the side of your bag or luggage. Another way is finding a jacket that packs down into its pocket.

It eliminates the concern of losing accessories but allows you to ball up the jacket into its tiniest dimensions. You can also lay your jacket flat at the bottom of your suitcase and pack your other belongings on top, as long as it’s thin enough. 

Pockets

Pockets are a great addition to everyday wear, but they have become almost a dealbreaker for jackets for travel. These handy inventions keep you from lugging a heavy bag everywhere to take your credit cards, cash, and passport. Even in a chilly airport, having a jacket with plenty of front pockets will allow you to quickly access your tickets and identification without scrolling through your suitcase. 

Some men’s lightweight travel jackets will even come with RFID internal chest pockets, where you know your passport will be safe. Also, hip pockets are a great way to warm up your hands quickly on those chilly days when you don’t want to carry gloves around. 

Ability to Layer

Another significant characteristic that the best travel jackets have is the ability to layer. If the coat is too bulky or form-fitting, you will lose the ability to layer sweaters underneath or a vest over the top. This is especially important in those fast-changing climates where you need to be extra prepared for weather shifts!

You will want to look for slightly loose jackets while also being thin enough to throw in extra layers. We recommend wearing bulky clothes and bringing an extra jacket when you try jackets on.
